Issue #12
The Yōkai Issue

Welcome to yet another issue of Night Terror Magazine! It’s May! The tulips are in full bloom, and the magnolia trees are just beginning to lose their early spring petals. May also welcomes AANHPI Heritage Month, a month to celebrate the voices that continue to challenge, expand, and enrich the horror genre. Horror is an exploration of where our fear takes roots, and there is strength in claiming that space through stories that have repeatedly been marginalized. It is our duty and a privilege to highlight artists whose work challenges not only terror but also identity, memory, and legacy.

We're thrilled to share an interview with the charming Grace Chan, whose muses on ‘80s horror and physical media's lingering appeal! Her words remind us of the ways making space for diverse narratives can open a new world of terror. This issue also features an interview with bestselling author Monika Kim, whose fiction is razor sharp. In our interview, she speaks about her own experiences that she addresses in her best-selling novel, The Eyes Are The Best Part. Lastly, we’ll take a folkloric deep dive into the dynamic depths of the creatures that have changed the genre through cultural confrontations.

As ever, this magazine is a haven for the uncanny and the experimental, but it’s also an urgent call to action. These narratives are vital to the foundation of the horror genre, and we’re genuinely so proud and honored to be able to bear witness to them. Within these colorful pages, you can always expect to find something new to carry back to your crypt. Thank you for joining us, for supporting narratives that burrow deeper, and for making space for all the voices of horror.

Stay haunted, you creeps!
